Contact Lists

Contact Lists are audiences for WhatsApp broadcast campaigns. They live under Broadcasts → Audience → Contact Lists. They are not the same as Lists in the Inbox sidebar (conversation folders) — see Lists in Inbox.

Open Contact Lists

  1. In the sidebar, open Broadcasts.
  2. Under Audience, select Contact Lists.

The page title is Contact Lists.

Create a list

  1. Click New Contact List.
  2. In Create Contact List, enter Contact List Name and any description fields shown.
  3. Click Create Contact List.

Lists start as manual membership. A list becomes Dynamic after you save a Dynamic filter on Manage Contacts (there is no separate create-time type toggle).

To rename or update metadata, open Edit Contact List and click Update Contact List.

Manage contacts

From the list table, open Manage Contacts.

At the top of Manage Contacts, choose one mode at a time:

SegmentUse for
Filter (Dynamic)Build and save a dynamic filter; membership is derived (browse only)
Manual / ImportAdd from Contacts, remove members, Import CSV, Export

You cannot edit filter and import CSV on the same list at once. Switching with unsaved work asks you to discard or keep editing.

Manual / Import

Default for new and static lists. Subtitle: Add from Contacts, or import a CSV (upserts to Contacts).

You can:

  • Add from Contacts — pick people already in Kazenly (Available to add).
  • Import CSV — upsert rows into Contacts and onto this list (see below).
  • Export — download the list as CSV with the same columns.
  • Review Current list membership and remove people when needed.

Each contact can show a broadcast status badge: Opted in, Opted out, or Not on WhatsApp (same statuses as Consent Management).

If a CSV dry-run is ready and you switch to Filter (Dynamic): Discard staged CSV import? — A CSV dry-run is ready to confirm. Switching to Filter will cancel this import. Finish or cancel the import before using a dynamic filter. Buttons: Discard and switch · Keep import.

Filter (Dynamic)

After you save a filter, the list shows a Dynamic badge. Subtitle: Dynamic list — membership comes from the filter below. Hint when Filter is selected on a dynamic list: Clear the dynamic filter to manage this list by hand or import a CSV.

In Filter mode, membership is display-only — no remove, no picker, no CSV. Use Manual / Import after Clear filter to edit by hand.

Dynamic filter

On Manage Contacts, select Filter (Dynamic) (badge Dynamic list when active; Last evaluated: when shown).

  1. Add conditions under Match all (AND) and/or Match any (OR) using Add.
  2. Condition kinds include Contact field, Tag, Last customer message, Flow submitted, and Consent / send status.
  3. Click Preview to see matched / addressable counts (and exclusions such as opted out or no phone).
  4. Click Save filter — success: Filter saved — list membership rematerialised. Save filter stays disabled until you add at least one condition (Add at least one condition before saving a dynamic filter.) — an empty filter is not allowed.
  5. Clear filter asks Clear dynamic filter — Clear dynamic filter and return this list to manual membership? Confirm with Clear filter. After clear, Manage Contacts switches to Manual / Import.

If you have unsaved filter edits and switch to Manual: Discard unsaved filter? — You have unsaved filter changes. Switching to Manual / Import will discard them. CSV import and filter save cannot both apply to the same list. Buttons: Discard and switch · Keep editing.

Define fields under Contact Fields before filtering on them.

Import CSV

  1. On Manage Contacts, select Manual / Import, then find Import CSV.

  2. Columns expected:

    phone,name,wa_status,tags

    • phone — required.
    • name — optional.
    • wa_status — optional: opted_in, opted_out, or not_on_whatsapp (overrides broadcast eligibility when present).
    • tags — optional.
  3. Click Choose CSV (shows Working… while processing) and pick a .csv file.

  4. Review the Dry run summary: Valid, New, Add, Overrides, Invalid, Already.

  5. If there are valid rows, click Confirm import.

If the file is too large, split it into smaller batches (about 2 MB per request).

Export downloads the same column layout for backup or editing outside Kazenly.

Use a list in a campaign

When you create a campaign, Target audience lists every contact list by name and contact count. Dynamic lists may show a ** · dynamic** suffix. Pick the list that matches who should receive the template.

People marked Opted out or Not on WhatsApp are skipped when the campaign runs — see Campaigns for addressable counts and exclusion summaries.
